Exercise 2: Focus with set aperture

I was really struggling to understand aperture and its relationship with focus and depth of field.  Again I didn't think the subject that was being shot was important (wrongly).  The course notes suggested something which had a lot of depth.  I still wasn't sure on the basics of my camera so looked around my house for something with depth and found the piano keys.

For the first photo, I focused on the foreground (the first few keys).  I don't think this is the best photo as your eye is only drawn to the the area in focus and you 'lose' a lot of the photo.  However, I could see an application for this as I don't completely dislike it.

For the second photograph I moved the focus to the centre of the piano keys.  This is a much more pleasing photo as the eye is  naturally drawn to the centre of the image.

For the third photo I moved the focus to the last few keys.  I think this photo is really hard to view I find my eye 'wandering' around trying to find the subject (but that might just be me!).

Again, in hindsight I don't think this was the correct image to shoot.  I think an image with more depth to it would have shown the results more clearly.  This is becoming more of a steep learning curve than I first imagined!
