Being completely new to photography the first exercise seemed relatively straight forward. I understood that on my full frame camera a focal length of 50mm would be equivalent to the actual size of the image as seen through the view finder, and on cameras with a cropped sensor this would be different. I didn't think the subject matter was important and as I was still learning the basics of my camera I shot what was close at hand.
I used my 24-105mm lens and set it to 50mm.

50.0mm EF24-105mm f/4.0 1/40 ISO1600 |
I then set it to its widest angle of 24mm and shot the same subject.
|
24.0mm EF24-105mm f/4.0 1/20 ISO800
|
I then zoomed to the longest telephoto length of 105mm and shot the same subject for the third time.
|
105.0mm EF24-105mm f/4.0 1/80 ISO3200
In retrospect, I think the subject is important whatever the purpose and an more interesting photograph could have been taken. That said, I did learn more about the camera and started to understand the importance of focal length when composing the photograph.
